AI技術の急速な進展、特に生成系AIの発展により、世界規模での社会変革が進行中であり、我々は現在、その対応方法が人類の未来を決定するような困難に直面しています。発展と統制をバランスさせながら人工知能と共有する人間中心の社会を実現するためには、人工知能を応用して新たな価値を創造する多様な専門研究の社会実装や人材育成を密接に連携させて課題解決に取り組む必要があります。
本学には自然言語処理を中心とした人工知能研究の世界トップグループが部局横断的に形成されており、世界的な影響力を持つ研究成果を生み出し続けています。これらのグループを結集・拡大し、生成系AIを含む高度なAIの理論や原理の解明、説明可能なAI(XAI）の開発、各専門領域における人工知能駆動型研究、国内外とのAIアラインメント／セーフティー研究、研究成果の社会実装と人材育成などを強化・推進する役割を担う国際的な研究拠点として、新たに「言語AI研究センター」を設置し、本学CDOの強力なガバナンスのもと「データシナジー創生機構」と有機的に連携していきたいと思います。今後とも、皆様のご指導・ご支援を賜りますようお願いします。

The rapid advancement of AI technology, particularly the development of generative AI, is driving social transformation on a global scale. We are now facing challenges whose solutions may determine humanity’s future. To realize a human-centered society that coexists with artificial intelligence while balancing progress and regulation, it is essential to closely integrate the social implementation of diverse specialized research that applies AI to create new value with the cultivation of human resources, and to work collaboratively on solving these challenges.
Tohoku University has built world-leading research groups in artificial intelligence, particularly natural language processing, across multiple departments, and consistently produces research results with global impact. Building on this foundation, we will unite and expand these groups through the establishment of the Center for Language AI Research. Operating under the strong governance of the Organization for Innovations in Data Synergy, Tohoku University, the center will foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation.
The Center for Language AI Research will play a pivotal role in advancing theoretical and principled studies of cutting-edge AI, including generative AI; developing explainable AI (XAI); promoting AI-driven research in diverse specialized fields; conducting AI alignment and safety research in partnership with domestic and international partners; and driving both the social implementation of research outcomes and the development of the next generation of talent.
Through these initiatives, we aim to establish ourselves as a leading international hub for language AI research.

2001年より日本電信電話株式会社（NTT）コミュニケーション科学基礎研究所にて研究員として自然言語処理、機械学習の研究開発に従事。2018年に東北大学大学院情報科学研究科 准教授に就任。その後、Google Visiting Researcher、東北大学 データ駆動科学・AI教育研究センター 教授を経て、2023年より現職。また、理化学研究所 革新知能統合研究センター 客員研究員、国立情報学研究所 客員教授などを兼務。
Jun Suzuki received his research training at NTT Communication Science Laboratories from 2001, working on natural language processing and machine learning. He joined Tohoku University as an Associate Professor in 2018, and later served as Cross appointment Researcher at Google, and Professor at the Data-driven Science and AI Education and Research Center. Since 2023, he has been Director and Professor at the Center for Language AI, Tohoku University. He is also Cross appointment Researcher at RIKEN AIP, and a Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Informatics.
